Crowns and Bridges
A dental crown (or cap) is a cover that fits over the top of heavily filled, broken down, cracked, or root canal treated teeth. They fit over the entire tooth like a bike helmet and wraps around to provide strength and protection to the tooth underneath. Crowns look and feel just like natural teeth, and can not only increase the strength and durability, but also provide a cosmetic improvement of the tooth. Each crown is custom made and designed to fit the specific clinical situation and aesthetic requirements.
A bridge is a form of replacement for a missing tooth consisting of an artificial tooth anchored to the adjacent natural teeth. Bridges can provide a fixed, non-removable option of filling gaps permanently where teeth are missing or have been lost. It is important to ensure that the support teeth of the bridge are healthy enough to support a false tooth.
Crowns and bridges can be fabricated from a variety of different materials depending on the tooth and position in the mouth. These include porcelain, zirconia and metal/gold alloy.
